My mom just texted me and there is a small lightening caused fire on her property near Arlee Montana . The Tribal fire crew is on scene with 6 trucks and getting it taken care of. These tribal fire crew guys are like the elite of the elite for fighting fires. These guys kick ass and take names, this is all they do from May through October.
Here is a diagram. The fire is in the upper right hand corner. The house is in the bottom middle. The house is pretty well protected with a large very green ya rd. We have ditch water for irrigation so she keeps it very green in the summer.

I would commit arson for a property like that

My BIL is a H ot S hot in the Northwest, although they truck him all over the West . Looks like a great job. Camp and fight fires all Spring/Summer/Fall, drive around and camp all winter. Only place he tries to avoid is CA. Said CalFire is a ( dangerous) joke to work with.

The 20 acres below lies undeveloped and is one of the nicest properties in the valley. I was trying to buy it about 10 years ago before we moved back to Montana. The entire southern border of the property is the river... with fantastic trout fishing.

For scale that is 56 acres. So it’s too close for comfort but at least it’s not at the back door.

I played with western fires one summer back in college ... NOT a hot shot. I was on a type II crew but interacted with a lot of hot shot crews. There are some seriously badass men and women that keep those dry climates as safe as they can . I have a buddy that went that route for a career on a heliattack squad where they have to hike in to chainsaw out landing pads. I’m only like 15% jealous of him though because that work can break your body. Tough folk.

I just got back from vacation in Penticton a couple of days ago, spent a ton of time at skaha lake. Turned on the tv this am and the entire place is on fire, uncontained and being evacuated. :(

We have a few all over here, sky is yellow and smells. I was really hoping this shit wouldn’t happen this year. Hopefully nothing like before up north. I have my Honda generator and a propane kit for it now so at least I have an easy way to power the important stuff.

Sorry, that sucks, seems like the new norm in the PNW. This is lightening caused, lots of strikes the last two days.

If I built a house anywhere up there it would be concrete and a metal or stone roof! I know a guy in Hawaii with a concrete house and it’s cool inside, people should try that.
